From Wikipedia- Applied Behavior Analysis “is a systematic process
of studying and modifying observable behavior through a manipulation of the environment…
It is comprised of an experimental approach to manipulating the environment and
tracking alterations in behavior. This allows the discovery and manipulation of
functional relationships between behavior and environmental variables.”
In other words, behavior analysis
uses the science of human behavior to change how people act. By determining what causes a person to act in a certain way we can figure
out how to change or stop negative behaviors. We can also determine what helps good behavior continue and encourage that
to happen more.
Mariposa Behavioral Health Services Offers the Following Treatment Options
In-Home Behavior Analysis:
Offering individualized attention as well as the most rapid path to change we believe that this service is the most effective way to solve
problems and increase positive skills. One of our behavior analysts will come to your home to discuss
your wants and needs. He or she will also do one or two observations. This will help determine areas of
strength as well as problem areas. Then, with input from family members the behavior analyst creates a plan
of action. The plan of action is a step-by-step guide to better behavior.
In-home behavior analysis can also be used to create an Applied Behavior Analysis educational treatment plan for
children with autism. Typically, this involves discussing goals, observation periods, and testing using the
Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills. Then a program is created and the Behavior
Analyst trains parents, staff, or caregivers on how to carry out the plan.
Playgroups:
Imagine your pre-school child with autism learning and playing in a fun environment with other pre-school
children. Our playgroups offer social, developmental, and educational skills through modeling, direct
teaching, and a positive small group atmosphere. With a variety of toys and sensory activities your
child will be gently encouraged to participate, play, and learn.
Individual Education Plan/In-School Consulting:
A behavior analyst will review your child’s IEP to insure it is specific, measurable, and
appropriate. The behavior analyst will suggest new goals or reword goals to make them meet best practice
guidelines. Also, if desired, a behavior analyst can attend IEP meetings to help advocate for your child’s
best education.
With permission from the school the behavior analyst will evaluate the school environment to determine
if appropriate accommodation and education is taking place. After observation the good things that are
occurring will be recognized and suggestions for improvement will be offered both to the school and to
you. This can help you to focus on the positive but bring awareness to areas where progress
needs to happen.
